We’ve reached the end of our journey. I can’t believe it! I hope this time together has been as enjoyable for you as it’s been for me. More than that, it’s my hope that you now feel you possess the information and tools you need to become a more patient person. We’ve covered a lot over the past month.

We started off our journey by defining patience and talking about why it’s important. Beginning with an understanding of the concept and a strong framework is necessary to continue learning. We then discovered some tangible tools and techniques to put in place in order to begin to demonstrate more patience and to calm down when you’re feeling frustrated.

It was early in our time together that I first introduced the idea that patience is a skill that can be learned. Because it’s so essential to the process, we re-visited the idea toward the end of our 30 days. It’s empowering to know that patience can be learned, practiced and improved upon. You aren’t a bad person or less worthy simply because patience doesn’t come easily to you.

In addition, we learned about some of the things that cause us to feel less patient. Personal triggers are a big problem for some of us. Knowing what triggers you is essential to overcoming it when you feel it happen. Feeling less rushed and more gratitude are also practices that can reduce your tendency to feel impatient.

Finally, we looked at your motivations to want to become more patient. These are all very personal to you. Knowing and acknowledging them can push you to move forward on your journey of learning ways to become more patient. Recognize that this won’t happen overnight. Bring out your list of reasons when you feel like giving up.

Assignment Day 30:

Take a few minutes today to reflect on not only how far you’ve come, but more importantly how this simple 30 day challenge has influenced you and changed you for the better.

Patience Days 14 & 15-The Physical Side Of Impatience

When you find yourself becoming impatient on a regular basis, you’re putting yourself into a constant state of stress.

In Day 13 teaching audio, I talked about impatient outbursts and how they can make you feel regretful. Emotions such as guilt, regret, distress and sadness may be associated with losing your cool. But, have you considered what you go through physically during times of impatience?

Patient people have been shown to be healthier, in general. That’s because there are a lot of negative side effects associated with impatience. Scientific studies have backed this up. Let’s explore the physical side of impatience such as who is most at risk, how it can manifest within your body and ways to deal with it.

At Risk for Health Problems

All of us are impatient from time to time. There are certain types of people who seem to live in a perpetual state of urgency. You may think of these people as those described with a Type-A personality. Overachievers and go-getters, this type doesn’t like to waste time and can become cranky and stressed when forced to wait around or deal with mundane annoyances. Being easily angered or in a constant state of alert and stress can make these types more susceptible to certain health problems than the average population. Issues like heart disease and high blood pressure are more common in Type-A individuals.

Stress and Impatience

When you find yourself becoming impatient on a regular basis, you’re putting yourself into a constant state of stress. When in that condition, your body responds by releasing hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. These are the same kinds of hormones needed during times of “fight or flight.” They can be helpful for helping you to escape a dangerous situation. However, they aren’t needed on a regular basis, and they can take a toll on your body in the form of weight gain, high blood pressure and irregular blood sugar levels.

Managing Impatience

It’s been shown that learning how to manage your impatience can help to return your stress levels to a healthy range. In turn, health issues associated with the increased hormones of stress can be avoided and improved. A formal anger management course could be helpful if you feel you have a serious problem managing your own stress, but it’s likely not necessary. Implementing some of the techniques we’ve discussed in past posts can help you significantly when it comes to taking control of your impatience.

Becoming impatient is absolutely a human trait. It doesn’t make you a bad person, by any means. It can lead to a number of issues in your life such as difficulty relating in work and personal situations. Ultimately, high levels of stress on a regular basis can have a negative impact on your health. The physical side of impatience can hurt you.

Patience 12 – Using Visualization Exercises To Help With Patience

Visualization Can Help With Patience

 

Cultivating patience is something that takes time, and ironically, also requires a great deal of patience. However, you don’t have to just sit around idly twiddling your thumbs and hoping to become a more patient person. In fact, that approach would likely not result in the spiritual maturity or self-development you desire. I’ve already shown you a few ways you can proactively work to become a more patient person. In today’s post, I’d like to explore one more. Visualization is a powerful tool to reaching a number of positive gains, and it can definitely help you to acquire more patience if you take the time to invest in the practice. Let’s look at how using visualization exercises can help with patience.

About Visualization

Visualization is a process in which you create an image in your mind of a future event you’d like to see come to light. It involves imagining and seeing events unfold in a way that is desirable to you. For visualization to be effective, it is best if you focus on the details of a scenario, down to the individual steps involved and the surroundings in which the event occurs. People have been using this method for centuries to help them attain success and to achieve their goals. It’s actually been scientifically studied and proven to provide tangible benefits. “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”

Benefits of Visualization

You can gain many benefits from visualizing yourself becoming more patient in life and in pursuing your dreams and goals. Many of the positive results of this practice can be used to help you increase your patience. In fact, one of the advantages of visualization is its versatility; it’s a tool that can be used anywhere at nearly any time and tailored to your specific needs. Professional athletes have used variations of this strategy to improve their performance. Visualizing your desires can help you to gain clarity and enhance your potential. As with meditation, this practice also has a track record of improving focus and lowering stress. Both of these are useful in becoming more patient. Seeing yourself becoming more patient, you can decrease nervousness, increase confidence, and increased patience.

Why It Works

Visualization is a process that can help you reach your goals. It actually transforms your brain and rearranges the connections within it. According to research in the field, neurons that control communication within the brain interpret visual imagery just as they would concrete actions. Therefore, actions are set in motion within our minds to form these pathways in the same manner as if you’d actually completed the steps you imagined.

Patience Day 10 – Reflect On When You’ve Been Too Impatient

It’s a fact of life. Sometimes we’re going to be impatient, and we’re also going to feel bad about it. Perhaps we’ve hurt someone’s feelings due to our lack of patience or maybe we’ve made a fool of ourselves because we let our frustration get the best of us. It happens. We’re only human. It’s what you do about these lapses that really matters. Let’s take a look at how to reflect on what you’ve been too impatient and how to handle such situations.

Recognize Impatience Has Occurred

First, it’s important to recognize your impatient transgression. Sometimes it can be tempting to just push such things under the rug, but doing so rarely helps us to do better in the future. It’s when we acknowledge our weaknesses or mistakes that we can correct them. So take time to admit what has happened so that you can deal with it. You definitely need to admit the issue to yourself. It can also be helpful to admit your mistake to others if you’ve hurt someone or caused hard feelings.

Reflect on the Incident

Once you’ve recognized what you’ve done, the next step is to reflect upon it. Think about the underlying reasons you might have acted so impatiently. Consider how you were feeling at the time, whether there were specific things that triggered you and if this might be a pattern you encounter often. The more questions you can answer for yourself, the better you will be at resolving the problem and getting better at avoiding such un-pleasantries in the future.

Make Amends

If you have hurt someone’s feelings, you really should take time to apologize. You’ll feel better, and so will they. In addition, you’ll be letting go of any negative feelings that may hold in a pattern of continuing to exhibit such behaviors in the future. It’s easier to make change when you’ve freed yourself from the burden of regrets. Starting with a clean slate will let you move on in a positive manner.

Plan for the Future

Finally, you need to learn from your mistakes and plan for ways to avoid making the same ones in the future.

Assignment Day 10

Write down the specific things you have done wrong that caused some impatience in your life.

Beside each one, make a note of what you could have done better. This is a fantastic exercise for gaining perspective and for making real, lasting change. Seeing your proposed actions steps on paper is a powerful tool for pushing you forward along your journey to do better.

Follow these steps when you feel you’ve been impatient. Doing so will feel so much better than wallowing in your regret or simply trying to forget about the incident. The hard work of self-reflection is all a part of your journey to becoming a more patient person

Patience Day 9 – Get In The Habit Of Realizing When Patience Is In Order (part 2)

Yesterday I talked about the times when the virtue of patience is definitely more in need than others. The first two areas were: when you really want something and when someone is getting on your last nerve. Here are the remaining two areas.

When You’re Feeling Stressed

With stress come a lot of strong emotions. Emotional responses are often impulses. They certainly don’t rely on patience. Stressful times call for extra patience in order to be sure you handle the situation in a manner that you won’t later regret. Stress is probably one of the best signals that patience is in order.

Psalm 118:5-6 (NKJV)- I called on the Lord in distress; The Lord answered me and set me in a broad place. The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?  

When You’re Feeling Pressured

Nothing’s worse than having your boss breathing down your neck or when your own high standards are causing you to feel under the gun. When you’re feeling pressured to get something done or to meet a certain goal, you naturally want to hurry things along. This can be a mistake. Being patient and thinking things through can be your best defense against making needless mistakes that will only set you further back. It may seem counterintuitive, but taking time to strategize is your best bet when you’re under pressure.

These are some examples of when patience may be in order. Take note of any others you think of. This information can help you to make proactive decisions in the future and to employ patience when it’s most needed.

Patience Day 8 -Get In The Habit Of Realizing When Patience Is In Order (Part 1)

There are some times when the virtue of patience is definitely more in need than others. It’s important to recognize when being patient is crucial to attaining a positive outcome to a particular situation. It can be hard to see the necessity during stressful or highly emotional situations, so let’s take a look at some examples ahead of time so you can recognize them when they occur. Understanding these four signs will help you to get in the habit of realizing when patience is in order. Let’s start with two of them today.

1. When You Really Want Something

You know that feeling you get when you want something so bad you can practically taste it? Well, that sensation is a clear sign that you should put on the brakes and pull out all the patience you can muster. Remember, you don’t want to wait so long that you miss out on an opportunity. Taking some time to be patient and evaluate a situation, however, can help you to more strategically get what you want.

Philippians 4:6 (NKJV)Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  

2. When Someone Is Getting on Your Last Nerve

When someone you care about or even a stranger is pushing every button you have, you should probably realize that you need some patience. You’re feeling triggered by their actions, and there’s likely an underlying reason why your emotions are running high. Take a moment to think about it and decide how to proceed in a way that will show sensitivity for the other person, while also meeting your own needs.

Patience Challenge Day 2 – What Exactly Is Patience?

“Patience is a virtue!” But what exactly is patience? It’s important to have at least a basic understanding of the concept and the areas of life that are affected by it if you are to cultivate more of this virtue in your life. That’s what today’s post is all about. We’ll look at brief definitions of what it means to be patient spiritually and naturally, along with an overview of the ways patience touches your life and why it’s important.

About Patience

Here are a few of the ways Merriam-Webster defines patient. Patient is, “bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint.” “Not hasty or impetuous,” and “steadfast, despite opposition, difficulty or adversity,” are also definitions found within this dictionary. While the concept can be used in different ways, it generally seems to refer to the ability to tolerate discomfort.

This tolerance can be in terms of waiting for something we greatly desire, managing negative feelings during difficult times or maintaining composure when feeling rattled by the behavior of another. One thing to note is that, despite the dictionary definition, how each of us defines patience is likely to be different, even across various stages of our lives.

Biblically, patience comes from a Greek word which is derived from two words. Hupo which means “under” and Meno which means to abide. Simply said, “If you rest or remain in God, no matter what things or circumstances you are brought under you will endure” (Ginger London). God uses patience to as one of the processes to make this happen in your life.

The Impact of Patience Throughout Life

Because patience involves tolerating discomfort across settings, it makes sense that the concept would have unique significance to individuals at various times in their lives. The ability to be patient also affects different parts of your life, no matter what stage you may currently be in.

Being able to handle frustration in whatever form it presents itself is beneficial to your mental health. The ability to be patient during particularly stressful or hectic life stages can save you a great deal of unhappiness and strife. It can improve relationships when you are better able to manage your emotions with regard to the behavior of others. Patience is necessary on the job, during life transitions such as becoming a parent or moving away and as you reach old age when you find yourself unable to complete tasks with your former ease.

Benefits of Being Patient

Beyond aiding one’s mental state, there are lots of benefits to being patient. With patience, you’re better able to achieve the goals you set for yourself. Because you don’t have the need for immediate gratification, you can weather the struggles in order to wait for the reward of achieving your desired result. You’ll form stronger relationships when you’re a patient person because you are able to be tolerant of behaviors that frustrate you. This tolerance, combined with communication, allows relationships to withstand adversity and continue to grow. Learning to be more patient may even be good for your physical health because it helps to lower stress, which is associated with problems like headaches, digestive issues and ulcers.

Patience is different things to different people. It manifests itself and is needed more at various times in your life and across a number of settings. Above all else, it can benefit you in countless ways to learn to cultivate patience, and that’s just what we’ll do throughout this journey.

Day 2 Assignment:

Write down in a journal five areas in your life you need to practice and develop more  patience. (for example, relationships, work)
